When Aberdeen Laundry Services set out to achieve Net Zero by 2040, we knew it would be challenging. What we didn’t anticipate was that our team would push us across that finish line in 2025—fifteen years ahead of schedule—and in doing so, become the first commercial laundry operation in the United Kingdom to achieve independently verified carbon neutrality certification under ISO 14068-1 and ISO 14064-1 standards.
This isn’t a story about purchasing carbon credits to greenwash our operations. This is a story about a team that fundamentally transformed how we do business, that refused to accept “industry standard” as good enough, and that proved an SME in one of the most energy-intensive sectors can lead on climate action.
For business leaders and sustainability professionals reading this, I want to share not just what we achieved, but how we achieved it—the methodology, the challenges, the investments, and the rigorous verification process that validates our carbon neutrality claim.
The Team That Made It Possible

Before I dive into the technical details, I need to introduce you to the people who made this possible.
Dr. Anusha Wijewardane, our Sustainability Project Lead, brought the scientific rigour and strategic vision we needed. She didn’t just implement off-the-shelf solutions; she rebuilt our entire approach to sustainability from the ground up, ensuring every decision was data-driven and genuinely impactful.
George Young, our Group Technical Manager, translated ambitious environmental goals into operational reality. George’s philosophy has always been clear: “This isn’t about setting a target to meet certification—this is about validation of the efforts we are already making.” That mindset—making genuine operational improvements rather than chasing certifications—has been transformative.
Surendra Khandelwal, Director, provided the unwavering leadership support necessary for this level of transformation. Sustainability initiatives fail without board-level commitment. Surendra ensured we had the resources, authority, and strategic alignment to succeed.
But beyond these leaders, this achievement belongs to our entire workforce of over 100 people—the operations teams who embraced new processes, the drivers who optimized routes, the maintenance staff who kept our efficient equipment running, and every individual who took ownership of our sustainability mission.
As Dr. Wijewardane puts it: “By building our foundations on integrity and creating an environment that establishes a community working towards a common goal, we’re innovating with care for our people, environment, and community.”
Transparency Builds Trust
We’re completely transparent about our methodology, our challenges, our investments, and our ongoing journey. That transparency builds trust with clients, employees, investors, and communities.
Don’t be afraid to share the details. Stakeholders can spot greenwashing from a mile away. Authenticity requires showing your work.
Recognition and Gratitude
This achievement belongs to our team:
To Carbon Neutral Britain: Thank you for partnership that went beyond transactional offsetting to genuine collaboration in building our carbon neutrality program.
